What is Drop Foot?

Kaitlyn Laube Ward, DPM

Drop Foot refers to the inability to lift (or dorsiflex) the front part of one’s foot when walking. This can result in dragging the foot or lifting from the thigh (also known as stoppage gait). This condition can be caused by previous trauma or surgery near the common peroneal nerve, various nerve or muscle disorders or damage to the central nervous system.

Traditional treatment for this condition includes: physical therapy, various braces (Ankle Foot Orthoses), tendon transfer surgery and/or foot and ankle fusion (arthrodesis) procedures.

New advancements in Peripheral Nerve Surgery such as nerve decompression or nerve transfer are now available and can provide an alternative to traditional methods of treatment for Drop Foot.
